We here at Team Winnebagoland Marine Center want all of our customers to have a safe and fun time on the water. We know that jet boats are great to cruise around in due to their high speeds and ease of maneuverability. However, if the correct safety guidelines are not followed, the odds of something going wrong increase. That is why we have created this safety guideline to help teach you what behaviors you should practice in order to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

Get Your Boat Checked

A thorough inspection is the first step to ensuring that your jet boat is safe to use. Look over the hull to find any leaks, cracks, or other signs of damage. Check the electrical system to make sure that everything is still functioning well. You should also check your engine’s oil levels and fuel tank and perform any necessary maintenance before departing for the water.

Don’t Overload the Boat

Your owner’s manual can tell you your boat’s maximum weight capacity. Make sure that the combined weight of all the people and gear on your jet boat never exceeds this limit. Otherwise, your craft can become unbalanced, which is especially dangerous at the high speeds that can be achieved in a jet boat.

Bring Life Jackets

A life jacket is a vital piece of safety equipment, and should be mandatory for everyone on your boat.  Make sure that all of your lifejackets are US Coast Guard-approved and are appropriate for the wearer’s height, weight, and water activity.

Check the Weather

Sailors have always been concerned about the weather, and for good reason. Bad weather can make boating seriously unsafe, so always check the weather forecast before heading out. If a storm or rough waters are predicted, you may have to cancel or postpone your trip for safety’s sake.

Other Considerations

Always keep a well-stocked safety kit on your jet boat. It should have flashlights and extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a water-proof whistle, ropes, a fire extinguisher, a bucket, and duct tape. When interacting with other crafts, maintain a safe speed and appropriate distance. Always follow proper docking and anchoring procedures and be familiar with the boating laws in your state. Overall, you should try to learn as much as you can about your jet boat and how to operate it.
